The Birkenhead Park School students have been exploring different careers each week which all involve some of the key mathematics skills they have been learning in lessons, all as part of the school’s new curriculum.

This week, the focus was on how doctors use mathematics in the real world with students from Years 7, 8 and 9 taking part in these lessons. They have been working out each other’s Body Mass Index (BMI) and calculating the dosage of medicine needed on different prescriptions. This involved using a formula and the patient’s weight and height data to work out their BMI.

Head of Mathematics, Mrs Clarke, said: “The students love doing these activities as it enriches their cultural capital and helps them understand how Mathematics is important in various careers.”
