The corridors of The Birkenhead Park School are buzzing with literary excitement as students kick off the new term by selecting their books for The Big Read - the school’s flagship literacy initiative. Now a well-loved tradition, The Big Read encourages every student to begin each day immersed in a good book, fostering a school-wide love of reading.

This term, as in previous years, student choice was at the heart of the programme. Pupils were given the opportunity to browse a specially curated selection of titles, spanning genres from mystery and fantasy to historical fiction and contemporary drama. The result? Every student now holds a book they are genuinely excited to read; chosen by them, for them.

Miss Dawes, Assistant Headteacher, explained: “The enthusiasm around book selection this term has been fantastic. Giving students ownership over what they read empowers them, and we’re already seeing a real buzz in the classrooms.”

As part of the initiative, the first 15 minutes of every day are now dedicated to reading during form time. It’s a calm, focused start to the day that not only strengthens reading skills but also encourages mindfulness and focus before lessons begin.

Form tutors across the school have reported a noticeable difference in student engagement. Miss Prosser, Year 8 Form Tutor, commented: “The room is silent, heads are down in books, and there’s this amazing sense of collective concentration. It’s a really powerful way to begin our mornings.”

A culture of reading

The Big Read is more than just a time slot; it’s becoming part of the culture at Birkenhead Park School. Displays around the school highlight favourite reads, staff recommendations, and student reviews.

Head of School Mrs McNamee praised the initiative, saying: “Reading is foundational to learning, and initiatives like The Big Read are vital in helping our students become confident, independent learners. We’re proud of how the whole school community has embraced it.”
