High-Quality Teaching at The Birkenhead Park School: The driving force behind our success
17 October 2025
Teaching at The Birkenhead Park School is more than just delivering lessons - it’s about creating a learning environment where every student can thrive.
Rooted in the ‘BPS Way’, teaching across the school is inclusive, purposeful, and carefully crafted to meet the needs of all learners. Our staff work tirelessly to build strong foundations of knowledge, ensuring that students are not only engaged and active in lessons, but also challenged to think hard, recall key knowledge, and confidently apply it in their writing.
Thanks to our amazing teachers, one of the school’s standout strengths is oracy. In every classroom, students are encouraged to speak like subject experts, just like their teachers - whether that’s using precise vocabulary to communicate like scientists or reasoning like mathematicians. This emphasis on academic language gives students the confidence and tools they need to think critically, express themselves clearly, and tackle challenging concepts with maturity.
Teachers at BPS regularly check students’ understanding, using responsive teaching strategies to address misconceptions in real time and ensure every child is supported and stretched. Lessons are designed to be active, engaging, and inclusive, so that all students are fully involved in learning. At BPS, ‘inclusion is invisible’ because high-quality teaching is built in, not built on provision for SEND.
Staff know their students incredibly well. Strong relationships underpin everything, and our teachers are relentless in their efforts to meet individual needs, provide support where it’s needed, and push every student to achieve their full potential.
The results of our teachers’ work speak for themselves. Thanks to the commitment and relentless drive of staff — alongside the hard work of our fantastic students — The Birkenhead Park School celebrated its best-ever GCSE results in 2025.
This success has not gone unnoticed. Once regarded as underperforming, the school has been recognised by Ofsted as being “on a rapid journey of improvement” — and these GCSE results offer undeniable proof of that transformation.
The foundations for this success are laid early. We recognise Key Stage 3 as the intellectual powerhouse of the school, where students are taught the knowledge and skills they need to excel at GCSE and beyond. We are proud that over 100 KS3 students graduated from the latest BPS University programme, which celebrates academic effort and provides students with opportunities to go above and beyond their curriculum.
High expectations extend beyond the classroom too, with over 95% of students regularly completing their homework — a testament to the culture of ambition that exists across BPS.
Assistant Headteacher Mrs Dawes said: “I am incredibly proud of our teachers who care passionately for the students they teach and focus on providing high-quality first teaching. Every decision we make is rooted in what’s best for our learners, and that’s why we’re seeing such positive results.”
Without our committed, expert teachers, The Birkenhead Park School wouldn’t be achieving the success it is today. With strong foundations, passionate staff, and determined students, our school is firmly on the up.
